Shakespeare’s First Folio Turns 400

Now known as the First Folio, that volume has become a lodestone of Shakespeare scholarship over the centuries, offering the most definitive versions of his work along with clues to his process and plenty of disputes about authorship and intention. In honor of its 400th anniversary, the British Library and Rizzoli recently released a facsimile version of the First Folio. On this week’s episode, The Times’s critic at large Sarah Lyall talks with Adrian Edwards, head of the library’s Printed Heritage Collections, about Shakespeare’s work, the library’s holdings and the cultural significance of that original volume. “If we didn’t have the First Folio, given that all the manuscript versions of the plays are lost, we wouldn’t have plays such as ‘The Tempest’ or ‘Twelfth Night’ or ‘A Winter’s Tale’ or ‘Julius Caesar’ or ‘Antony Cleopatra’ or ‘Macbeth,’” Edwards says. You can send them to books@nytimes.com.

Yet a new book penned by his daughter aims to take a fresh perspective on the man behind the statesman. Published by maker of luxury tomes Rizzoli, “Mandela: In Honor of an Extraordinary Life” is a photographic account of the man and his family. In an email to CNN, Dr. Mandela said she wrote the book “so that people have a better understanding of who he was (and) what formed him as a human being. “I understood my father a bit better in terms of the sacrifices that he made,” Dr. Mandela said. “Mandela: In Honor of an Extraordinary Life” is published by Rizzoli and on sale in the US and UK now.

NEW YORK (AP) — On the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's First Folio, rare originals are being displayed and publishers are offering collectors editions of Shakespeare's plays, including one that sells for $1,500. The British Museum is collaborating with Rizzoli Books in New York on “Shakespeare’s First Folio: 400th Anniversary Facsimile Edition,” contained within a slipcase cover. Besides Doran's introduction, the Folio Society release includes a foreword by Dame Judi Dench. “In an era when everything seems disposable, I feel like there's a good market for fine editions of classic books,” says Folio Society publishing director Tom Walker. “You can buy a Ben Jonson folio for a few thousand dollars; a Shakespeare folio will cost you millions.

The coffee table book is the rare genre defined not only by content but by destination. Sure, not all of these oversized tomes wind up marooned beside a scented candle in someone’s living room — some make it all the way to hotel lobbies and the waiting rooms of cosmetic dentistry practices. I’ve seen volumes on Panama hats, rattan and a mall in Dubai — worthy topics of study, surely, but perhaps not majestic enough to merit the heft of the format. Jimmy Metyko’s SHAPING SURF HISTORY (Rizzoli, $55) is, though sneakily. But what a scene to witness.

But in the late 1960s, the architect Edward Vason Jones began to bedazzle the State Department’s eighth floor with cornices, columns, coffers and gilding. And as before, every art piece, every gold flake, every carpet thread was donated or paid for by private funders. An opulent new book called “America’s Collection: The Art & Architecture of the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the U.S. Department of State” (Rizzoli/Electa) tells this story in pictures of frumpy interiors turned into glittering set pieces. The rooms, which have been closed for renovations and updating, preserving their antique character, as the State Department building itself is re-roofed, will reopen Sept. 26. Members of the public can book visits at iipstate.my.site.com and can explore the rooms online in a self-guided virtual tour.

The startup allows machine learning teams to build computer vision AI models. Computer vision models extract information from visual data sources, such as images and videos, to help computers and machines to better interpret these visual inputs. Many computer vision models are powered by machine learning technology, but this process can be time-consuming to engineer. This helps companies to develop AI models much faster and cuts down on the time needed to manage machine learning data, according to V7. V7 labels data automatically, so that teams do not have to annotate the data from scratch.
